Reimagine Faculty Workload in an Era of Budgets and Burnout
Partner Event
Provosts and other academic leaders are increasingly confronting the complex challenge of recalibrating faculty workload policies in the face of persistent budget deficits, faculty dissatisfaction, and shifting institutional priorities. Historically, course reductions have been used as a stopgap for addressing salary compression or retention, but this has led to unsustainable costs and uneven practices across departments. As federal research funding contracts and state mandates like post-tenure review emerge, faculty are being asked to carry heavier teaching loads—often without a transparent or equitable framework in place.
This session will convene provosts for a discussion with EAB Managing Director David Attis about establishing clear, consistent, and data-informed workload standards, while balancing strategic priorities and maintaining faculty engagement and morale.
