2026 Experiential Learning Awards

Recognizing institutions advancing work-integrated learning through real-world, employer-informed experiences and accessible job simulations.

These awards highlight colleges and universities preparing students with practical, career-connected experience while scaling access across campus through virtual job simulations. Institutions recognized here are embedding work-integrated learning into the academic journey to improve student outcomes and workforce readiness at scale.

About the Awards

The Experiential Learning Awards recognize institutions that are improving student outcomes through experiential learning – with a focus on expanding scale and access to employer-informed job simulations and work-integrated learning.

These institutions are expanding access to real-world, career-connected experiences by embedding employer-informed learning directly into academic programs and on-campus student programming.

A key component of this approach is Forage, employer-designed online job simulations that provide students with hands-on, real-world experience in an accessible, scalable format. These simulations enable institutions to reach more students, complementing traditional in-person opportunities like internships and project-based learning.

The result is a more consistent and scalable approach to preparing students for campus and career success.

Why Work-Integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning strengthens experiential learning by connecting academic content to real-world application.

Students gain exposure to practical work, build relevant skills, and explore career paths with greater insight into the roles & responsibilities of said pathways. Institutions benefit from a scalable and equitable model that supports broad student access while maintaining alignment with in-demand skills needed to be successful in the quickly changing world of work.

Online job simulations, such as those delivered through Forage, help expand access by enabling more students to participate in employer-informed experiences alongside in-person opportunities.

Judging Criteria

Educators are evaluated across three areas:

  • 1

    Student Engagement

Measures the percentage of students participating in and completing accessible, employer-informed experiential learning, driven by direct educator involvement.

To calculate student engagement, we analyzed Forage program data, including the percentage of students enrolled and completion rates associated with educator-led implementation.

  • 2

    Institutional Advocacy

Measures the on-campus initiatives led & supported by educator to drive scalable experiential learning across campus.

  • 3

    Fostering of Best Practices

Measures the level of educator participation in sharing best practices for integrating experiential learning into student experience, both on-campus and via conferences, forums and webinars.

Judging Criteria

Institutions are evaluated across three areas:

  • 1

    Student Engagement

Measures the percentage of students participating in and completing accessible, employer-informed experiential learning, reflecting both scale and depth.

To calculate student engagement, we analyzed Forage program data, including the percentage of students enrolled and completion rates in the past year at each institution.

  • 2

    Institutional Context

Assesses how well the institution supports access to career-connected learning based on available programs and student population.

Institutional context reflects the broader experiential learning ecosystem, including both virtual and traditional in-person opportunities.

To contextualize results, we incorporated data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), including occupational programs, continuing professional education, credit for prior or life experience, placement services, and credit for military training.

  • 3

    Faculty Engagement

Measures the level of faculty participation in delivering accessible, employer-informed experiential learning within courses.

To calculate faculty engagement, we measured the percentage of faculty registered on Forage. This indicates adoption of employer-informed, simulation-based learning within academic environments.
