Expanding Access to Dual Enrollment

Summary

This report describes how districts can improve equity and student achievement by expanding access to dual enrollment courses. The report first explores the relationship between dual enrollment and student achievement. Next, the report describes how district administrators negotiate partnership agreements with higher education institutions. Lastly, the report offers strategies (e.g., student supports, parent engagement events) to increase student participation in dual enrollment courses.

  1. Research suggests that access to dual enrollment coursework can improve students’ secondary and postsecondary outcomes.

     

  2. Leverage competition among potential dual enrollment partners to secure beneficial agreement terms.

     

  3. To engage principals, create district-imposed accountability metrics and celebrate principal successes.

     

  4. Eliminate prerequisites and readiness assessments where possible to remove barriers to student access.
