As institutional leaders develop diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plans, it’s important for them to consider how they frame their priorities and commitments. EAB reviewed over 40 DEI plans from institutions across the U.S., Canada, and Europe and found that many used generic and deficit-based language to articulate their priorities.
At many institutions, living on campus is a crucial dimension of the student experience, as well as a key source of auxiliary revenue. But current public health evidence indicates that communal living could strongly facilitate virus transmission, and many campuses lack the ability to give each student the safest option of a private room and bathroom. Ultimately, all universities are facing the same question: what is the housing solution that provides students with an on-campus experience that’s as fulfilling as possible, while also protecting the community from outbreaks?
On May 11th, the US Department of Education (ED) published their long-awaited funding allocations and guidance around the $39.6B allocated to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF III) in the American Rescue Plan. ED’s new guidance builds upon their March 19th updated interpretation for HEERF II uses and lost revenue reimbursement.
