Due to unfinished learning caused by COVID-19, many incoming students require more support than previous incoming classes.

First-year students have always needed to adjust from secondary school to the more rigorous academic demands of university and managing a schedule on their own. But universities are increasingly saying that today’s students have more fundamental gaps in their knowledge and need to learn the basics—such as how to make flashcards or study in a group.

Although students’ academic readiness needs are changing, lecturers are not always prepared to support students in these new ways, and many run their classes the same as they did before the pandemic. Lecturers often focus on content and subject-specific skills development, often assuming students already know how to study, work on group projects, or prepare for timed exams.

This event focuses on holistic academic readiness support, sharing best-practice examples from across the globe. John Wyatt the Project Manager of Live Engagement and Attendance Project (LEAP) from University College Dublin (UCD) will be a guest speaker. He will discuss how UCD use learner analytics data to identify struggling or disengaged students and provide proactive student support.
