As student and employer demands rapidly shift and university budgets face new constraints, colleges and universities are under growing pressure to reimagine their academic offerings and traditional disciplinary boundaries. This session, first presented at EAB’s 2025 Provost Roundtables, will explore the drivers behind the trend towards interdisciplinary undergraduate programs and share the six hallmarks of the most successful interdisciplinary programs:

  • Meets student interests
  • Aligns with employer demand
  • Benefits from clear leadership and structure
  • Rewards unit and faculty participation
  • Minimizes additive costs
  • Meaningfully integrates disciplines

Additionally, participants will gain strategies to navigate common pitfalls and overcome structural, cultural, and process barriers.
