Summer slide is particularly troubling in the early years as students can forget knowledge of important foundational skills over the summer. On average, students lose one month of learning during the summer. While summer slide can impact all students, the average learning loss masks how students from different socioeconomic backgrounds fare.
Strong summer programming can narrow the achievement gap in reading. But students cannot benefit from summer programming if they never enroll or attend. Despite districts’ best efforts at targeting students for enrollment, only 10% of identified students enroll in the district’s summer programming. Some of those students will never attend a single day of camp.
This on-demand webconference will provide strategies for mitigating the impact of summer slide by improving student participation and engagement in summer learning programs. Additionally, we will discuss how districts can support students who cannot attend summer learning experiences through parent-facing literacy prompts.
