Summary Advocates of multiage education believe student learning improves and children demonstrate personal growth in classes with students of multiple ages. As a result, some elementary schools offer one or more multiage classrooms. This report profiles how administrators and teachers implement and administer multiage classrooms at six school districts. It discusses teacher selection, parent communications, student selection and logistics, and evaluation in multiage classes. Key observations from our research 1. Research supporting multiage education and teacher enthusiasm motivate administrators to create multiage classrooms. 2. Administrators merge single grades into a multiage class based on individual school community preferences. 3. Administrators dedicate significant time to explain the multiage model to parents. 4. Once administrators launch a multiage classroom, demonstrated student engagement, enthusiastic multiage teachers, and positive parent feedback encourage administrators to continue the model over time.
