How a Public University Made Data-Informed Decisions to Improve Course Completion and Narrow Their Achievement Gap

Discover how University of Alaska Anchorage’s data-informed efforts paid off with a 4.2% increase in the average course completion rate and a 6.6% increase in their six-year graduation rate.

University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is an open-admissions public university serving 15,090 undergraduates at the main campus in Anchorage and multiple smaller campuses across the state. At UAA, “non-traditional is our traditional”—94% of students are commuters, 57% are 25 or older, 60% attend part-time, and 10% are Alaska Native. They have a 32% six-year graduation rate and a 67% retention rate.

UAA identified that many of their incoming students were underprepared for college and placing into pre-college level courses. UAA leadership recognized that this contributed to low course completion rates and achievement gaps between different student populations—but they needed data to convince faculty and empower stakeholders to act.
