Unfortunately, even under the best of circumstances, students may be exposed to trauma in their homes or neighborhoods. Sadly, the COVID-19 crisis increases the likelihood of domestic abuse and substance abuse, putting kids at elevated risk, regardless of their family background. Research shows that trauma can undermine children’s ability to learn, form relationships, and function appropriately in the classroom.
Handle with Care (HWC) programs support children exposed to trauma and violence through improved communication and collaboration between law enforcement, schools/child care agencies and mental health providers, and connects families, schools, and communities to mental health services. This live question and answer session with HWC’s Executive Director will focus on the Handle with Care program and why a program like this is even more critical during the COVID-19 crisis for students in need.
