How Colleges and Universities Can Navigate Student Death

A Best Practice Guide for Student Affairs Leaders

Unfortunately, student death is a matter of when, not if for university leaders. Over the last year, EAB conducted research on how to facilitate healing on campus in the aftermath of student deaths. Our research team found that preparing an institution’s student death response in advance can ensure an equitable and compassionate response, foster healthy grieving, and avoid flashpoints in the aftermath of a tragic loss. Use the resources outlined in this research report to learn about common pitfalls in institutional responses to student death and practices to avoid them.
