After labor, physical space is the largest expense item on most campuses, and it has only grown in the last couple of decades. As student populations have expanded, the activities of academic and administrative units have changed, and material costs for space and infrastructure have ballooned, with institutions spending $600 per sqft for construction on the average higher ed building—more than double what it was a decade ago.

Budget shortfalls are only amplifying these issues, and maintenance needs continue to impact the student experience, impair critical research efforts, and ultimately prevent institutions from achieving their strategic goals. Colleges and universities face daunting deferred maintenance backlogs, but to make real progress, institutions need the support of leaders across campus.

Join EAB for a cross-functional discussion on how higher ed can turn the tanker and address deferred maintenance backlogs.

Participants will leave this session understanding:

  • Best practices to address common inefficiency of space
  • What has changed about physical space over the last several years—including how remote work, student support, and campus sustainability goals impact space decisions
  • EAB resources to help Facilities units communicate the challenges and impact of deferred maintenance decisions to other leaders across campus
