One of the biggest challenges that academic leaders experience is leading change in their departments. Often as a leader, you are convincing your former peers of the importance of an initiative that will take them out of their comfort zone. Your colleagues could respond positively and support the change—or push back and cause headaches at best and stalled or failed initiatives at worst. And as higher ed enters into a “less with less” era, these challenges will become even more frequent and high-stakes.

In this session, join fellow deans and department chairs as we dissect common hurdles to implementing change in higher ed academic units. We’ll discuss not just how to avoid the top change pitfalls, but also how to leverage existing relationships and communicate institutional priorities to advance both individual academic units as well as the institution as a whole. At its core, this session will provide a framework for approaching and successfully implementing change in an academic unit.

By attending this session, participants will understand the art and science of behavioral change in higher ed, as well as benefit from several interactive opportunities in which they will react to and analyze common change scenarios. Participants will be able to network with peers through these breakout group activities, and will have an opportunity to share as well as learn from other academic leaders and their change management experiences.
