Generative AI Curriculum Prioritization Assessment

This assessment helps academic portfolio owners prioritize curriculum revisions across programs to maintain relevance in a GenAI-driven world of work

Generative AI (GenAI) is a transformative force in the workplace, capable of predicting or generating text, images, and more. As it gains traction across professional fields over the next decade, understanding its implications is crucial.

Contrary to the belief that GenAI requires extensive technical expertise, EAB projects that only 5% of workers will hold advanced GenAI roles. The remaining 95% will be basic to intermediate users, needing just a foundational understanding of GenAI applications relevant to their tasks.

For professional, continuing, and online (PCO) units, failing to equip students with the necessary GenAI skills risks diminishing their relevance in an evolving job market. Prospective students will increasingly seek programs that prepare them for a GenAI-driven future. It is essential to start revising curricula now. But in a moment of limited resources and overflowing faculty workloads, the best approach is to prioritize the most urgent revisions, based on which industries and roles are implementing GenAI the most rapidly.

EAB’s GenAI Curriculum Prioritization Assessment will evaluate a selection of 10-15 programs in your portfolio, mapping them against data on AI applications across industries. The resulting custom report will guide you in identifying which of your programs prepare students for the most rapidly changing jobs, enabling you to make data-driven decisions about which programs require revision first.

3 main ways GenAI will affect jobs

  1. Transformed Jobs

GenAI will reshape the tasks required in certain roles, automating routine functions like data entry and allowing workers to focus on higher-level responsibilities, such as client presentations. Programs must emphasize the skills needed for these expanded roles, as future entry-level workers will be expected to undertake tasks typically associated with more advanced positions to avoid displacement.

  2. Integrated Jobs

GenAI will enhance the quality of work for existing tasks. Workers who fail to adopt GenAI tools may underperform in their roles. Programs should focus on teaching students to apply GenAI effectively in industry-relevant tasks and projects.

  3. Minimally Impacted Jobs

GenAI will mainly be used for basic, routine tasks, resulting in minimal changes to these roles. Programs for these jobs will only need to cover fundamental GenAI literacy.

Our programs are preparing students today for a working world that incorporates GenAI across a wide range of jobs and industries. Use our assessment to guide you in strategically tackling this portfolio-wide curriculum shift.

Who should use this assessment

The GenAI Curriculum Prioritization Assessment is primarily designed for PCO leaders. Secondary users include deans, members of GenAI working groups, faculty in programs recommended to be prioritized for GenAI integration, and center for teaching and learning staff deciding which faculty to prioritize for professional development.

How to use the assessment

After you request a GenAI Curriculum Prioritization Assessment, EAB will provide a report with custom analysis for your programs. Combine our analysis with internal metrics to come to a holistic decision about which programs to revise with GenAI content. We recommend the following action items:

  • Review the GenAI Integration Priority Grid to determine which programs require curricular revision most urgently
  • Read the section on each category to understand the type of curricular changes necessary for each of the programs that your team submitted for review
  • Use the categorization of different programs to start a conversation with faculty on how curriculum in each program should be adjusted and encourage faculty to push back where they disagree
