The Chief Information Officer’s Expanding Enterprise Role
Partner Event
The role of the CIO is changing rapidly. As technology becomes increasingly central to institutional strategy and operations, CIOs are taking responsibility for broader portfolios, navigating more complex organizational structures, and assuming greater accountability for institutional risk, resilience, and performance.
This virtual conversation will bring together CIOs to explore how their role is evolving and what these changes mean for leadership priorities and approaches. Participants will hear directly from peers leading large and complex institutions, including Brandon Bernier, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for Colorado State University–Fort Collins and the Colorado State University System, and Nish Malik, Chief Information and Digital Strategy Officer for the San Francisco Bay Region Network.
The discussion will explore how CIOs are adapting as their responsibilities expand beyond traditional information technology functions. Speakers will share perspectives on leading across broader institutional portfolios and multiple campuses, balancing strategic innovation with operational accountability, and managing growing expectations related to risk, cybersecurity, resilience, and institutional continuity.
Participants will also have an opportunity to reflect on how these shifts are influencing their own leadership models, organizational structures, and priorities.
Participants will:
- Explore how the CIO role and technology leadership function are evolving.
- Learn how peers are leading across broader portfolios, systems, and multiple campuses.
- Discuss approaches to managing institutional risk, resilience, and operational accountability.
- Consider how leadership priorities, structures, and decision-making must adapt to increased complexity.
- Gain practical insights from CIOs navigating these changes in real time.
