Independent school leaders are facing growing questions about how technology affects learning, student well-being, and the development of independent judgment. Parents and boards may call for broad restrictions, while schools are also considering how AI and other tools can support students and staff.

This virtual roundtable will help heads of school and their teams respond with greater clarity. The discussion will distinguish among three connected but different debates: student phone access, the role of screens in learning, and whether AI strengthens or replaces student thinking. Rather than treating technology as a single intervention, participants will consider what a specific tool is meant to do, the conditions under which it may help, and how its effects can vary across students.

Key takeaways:

  • Distinguish concerns about phones, classroom technology, and AI instead of treating them as one debate.
  • Use local evidence about how, why, and when students use technology to guide school decisions.
  • Align technology choices with specific learning goals and student needs.
  • Help students judge when AI is appropriate, verify its outputs, and protect essential knowledge-building.
  • Assess AI workflows for net time returned, with clear human review and a plan to reinvest that capacity.
