An institution’s workforce is its most expensive investment—and also its most undermanaged one. While 60-70% of the average institution’s operating budget is spent on labor, about half of institutions don’t measure, check, or strategically influence employee performance at scale. The solution is a strong and modernized performance management system—but it’s a solution that higher ed has yet to prioritize.

This lack of performance management infrastructure has significant consequences across campus. For instance, unwieldy review forms discourage managers from giving valuable feedback. Current staff―both underperformers and high performers―often go unrecognized. And new applicants—especially Gen Z workers—are hesitant to apply to jobs without opportunities for feedback or career development.

On the other hand, institutions that use performance management as a lever to build a high-performing workforce can see notable gains. Organizations with strong performance management are more likely to have engaged staff who stay longer, grow within the organization, and contribute to overall strategic goals. Performance management, in this way, goes far beyond the impact on a single individual and instead ultimately influences the success of the entire institution.

This event outlines the urgency for colleges and universities to modernize their current performance management systems to better recruit and retain staff, as well as achieve their institutional strategic goals. You will learn six key tactics to create a frictionless performance management infrastructure that prioritizes staff growth, accountability, and alignment with broader institutional goals. Attendees will leave the session with a better sense of what to prioritize when rethinking performance management at their own institution, as well as tools and additional EAB resources to start their workforce performance transformation.
