It is important to design appropriate performance indicators that cascade institutional strategy to level-appropriate goals and metrics. The performance indicators should be aligned, specific, measurable, actionable, and time-bound.
We identified the five metrics that most institutions track and then the related challenges in translating to units. One example is student-faculty ratio, and the challenge translating to units is that its gameable. Departments can cap enrollment to maintain ratio.
Instead, departments should focus on instructional capacity gap, SCH per FTE, and unfunded course releases. In this webconference, discover 3 analyses that help drive department action around key contributors to financial health: faculty workload, instructional capacity, and teaching productivity.
