Academic advisors are typically the best-positioned personnel on campus to impact student retention and persistence, but all too often, advising is underutilized. Without central coordination, students lack a consistent experience with advising and often do not even meet with the same advisor from one term to the next. As a result, advising on many campuses has become synonymous with course registration—far from the “success coach” vision of student support that is increasingly in demand.
To make the most of investments in advising, academic leaders must shift the emphasis from basic transactions toward activities that significantly impact retention and timely completion. This webinar provides a blueprint for a student-centered advising model by discussing two critical imperatives:
- Structuring advising to enable consistency and accountability. This encompasses centralized oversight and organization of advising as well as consistent caseload assignments based on student major migration patterns
- Targeting intervention strategies based on student risk. Strategies include building a holistic and data-informed risk model, identifying subtle signs of early attrition risk, and triaging advisor time to focus on students with immediate needs
