Navigating 4+1 strategies for enrollment growth: a journey of innovation and collaboration

Embarking on a journey to fortify the 4+1 pipeline, our institution has undertaken a multifaceted approach aimed at enhancing graduate student enrollment projections and supporting the transition of undergraduate students into graduate programs. With 12 distinct 4+1 undergraduate pathways currently in place, our capstone project evolved into a strategic exploration: How can we strategically develop the 4+1 pipeline to increase undergraduate enrollment while nurturing and cultivating students to support their advancement into graduate enrollment?
Recognizing institutional priorities
At the heart of this undertaking lies a dual significance: personal curiosity and institutional necessity. Enrollment projections serve as a cornerstone for budgetary decisions, aligning with the strategic priorities set forth by our university president, particularly the focus on maintaining financial sustainability. Insights from an EAB presentation underscore the critical importance of graduate enrollment, prompting us to view the 4+1 cohort as a key pipeline for graduate student recruitment and revenue generation.
Navigating internal challenges
Navigating internal challenges proved vital in optimizing the 4+1 pathway. Clarifying the definition of a 4+1 program emerged as an important initial step, distinguishing the program as a pathway where undergraduates begin taking graduate coursework in their senior year. However, challenges exist, including multi-departmental involvement, program variances, and the need for comprehensive information distribution to prospective students.

Strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts
In response to these challenges, strategic initiatives were undertaken over the past six months. A recruiter training workshop focused on 4+1 programs was developed and held, equipping the admissions team with the knowledge and tools to effectively communicate program benefits and application processes. Focus group meetings convened key stakeholders, fostering collaboration and alignment across departments. The development of a Tableau dashboard facilitates personalized outreach to undergraduate students, streamlining recruitment efforts and increasing engagement.
Driving implementation and next steps
Implementation and next steps are integral to our ongoing efforts. Material from the recruiter training workshop will be utilized in future sessions, ensuring continuity and consistency in messaging. The Tableau dashboard enables targeted outreach, inviting students to specialized events and internal recruiting initiatives. A shared document outlining application timelines and requirements provides clarity to both students and departments, while ongoing refinement of communication plans and webpage development enhances accessibility and engagement with our 4+1 students, and undergraduates who may be prospective 4+1 students.

Looking ahead, our commitment to student success and enrollment growth remains steadfast. Continued focus group meetings and application days underscore our dedication to supporting students through every step of their academic journey. Finalizing timelines and creating next-step guides for each 4+1 program will further streamline procedures and enhance support processes.
Our vision for navigating 4+1 strategies for enrollment growth is multifaceted, requiring collaboration and innovation across departments. While challenges persist, our collective efforts are geared towards increasing first-time freshmen enrollment into 4+1 programs, improving graduate enrollment projections as a result, and enhancing support processes for current 4+1 students.
