Resources to produce a draft of the IT strategic plan

After collecting information about the IT environment and identifying IT strategic goals, the time comes when someone has to put hands to keyboard and produce a draft of the IT strategic plan. Hopefully the steps outlined in the Prepare, Discover, and Distill Phases will help the ITSP working group avoid the tyranny of the blank page. But as a final assist, the IT Forum has complied and analyzed existing IT strategic plans from the higher education industry.

The good news is that if you have adhered to the process the IT Forum provides, most of the pieces of the strategic planning puzzle are already in your hands. Typically, IT strategic plans include an:

  • Introduction
  • Vision and Mission Statements
  • SWOT Analysis
  • Overview of IT Strategic Goals
  • IT Strategic Goals and Objectives

This document outlines what to include in each of those sections, a target length, and exemplary samples from real institutional plans. It also outlines some basic design principles to increase accessibility and functionality.
