Managing Behavioral Disruptions in Early Grades Audit

Districts across the U.S. report a dramatic rise in behavioral disruptions, most notably in the early grades. Educators indicate that kindergarten and elementary school students are exhibiting more intense types of misbehavior, and doing so much more frequently. Our research found that while most districts have adopted some evidence-based approaches, they struggle with ensuring their consistency, fidelity, and long-term sustainability

Use this diagnostic to help determine your district’s key areas for improvement in managing behavioral disruptions in early grades. The questions you’ll answer are structured according to four key areas of opportunity for districts:

1. Prevent misbehavior through early intervention

Use this portion of the audit to assess your school’s maturity in the following areas:

  • Early identification of incoming high-risk kindergarteners
  • Universal screening for behavioral and emotional issues
  • Cultivating positive adult-student relationships at schools

2. Create conditions for positive classroom behavior

Use this portion of the audit to assess your school’s maturity in the following areas:

  • Designing physical classroom space conducive to self-regulation
  • Districtwide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) implementation
  • Districtwide behavior guideline standardization

3. Promote the social-emotional well-being of students and teachers

Use this portion of the audit to assess your school’s maturity in the following areas:

  • Direct instruction of key social-emotional skills
  • Systematic support for teachers’ social-emotional well-being

4. Enhance support for higher-needs students

Use this portion of the audit to assess your school’s maturity in the following areas:

  • Districtwide trauma-informed care implementation
  • Multidisciplinary forums for effective intervention with higher-needs students
  • Alternative setting with focus on reintegrating students into the regular classroom

Assess current district-and school-wide strategies to identify areas of greatest opportunity for intervention and/or innovation. Then, prioritize best practices to facilitate school-and district-level improvement.
