F&A Communications Toolkit
Communication tools to educate stakeholders on facilities and administrative (F&A) funding
While the proposed 10% cap on facilities and administrative (F&A) funding didn’t come to fruition in 2017, it did lead chief research officers (CROs) to realize shortcomings in their communication strategies.
CROs and their teams can improve their approach by combining broad, general F&A messaging with targeted messages that align with stakeholders’ priorities and interests.
To support these efforts, the five tools in this resource provide examples and recommendations for better communicating about F&A with stakeholder groups. Tool 1 serves as the foundation for tools 2-5. Research teams should use tools 1-3 to inform their F&A communication strategy, while tools 4-5 are optional resources for campuses that want to further build their library of communication materials.
Tool 1: Stakeholder-targeted messaging matrix
This tool prioritizes information to share with specific stakeholders and provides key themes and talking points. Use this tool to develop stakeholder-targeted messages customized to align with their unique needs, interests, and priorities.
Tool 2: One-pager development guide
Examine three sample one-pagers and a list of items to consider including before developing your own. Then download the template to create a customized one-pager for your campus.
Tool 3: Internal presentation templates
Use this tool and customizable presentation to communicate critical F&A messages to internal audiences.
Tool 4: Infographic design plan
This tool includes examples of F&A infographics with differing target audiences and levels of specificity. It offers design and content recommendations, along with a four-step process to guide the infographic creation process.
Tool 5: Video production guide
Use this tool to develop a short video educating key stakeholders on F&A. It highlights characteristics of effective videos and other considerations for the production process, such as target audience and key content.
