AI Maturity Model for Higher Education

As AI’s emergence has redefined what is possible in higher education, institutions worldwide are exploring how they can deploy generative AI on their campus today. However, this means campus leaders must first assess where their institutions are and what goals they hope to achieve with AI.

EAB’s AI Maturity Model diagnostic will help campus leaders evaluate their maturity aspirations in the five domains where AI is poised to have the most transformative impact, from incorporating AI into the curriculum to supercharging productivity. Once campus leaders have completed this diagnostic, EAB experts can provide support and guidance to help institutions achieve their AI ambitions.

Download the diagnostic or learn more about the five domains we assess below.

Five areas of AI maturity

The AI Maturity Model enables campus leaders to assess their maturity and identify goals across five areas.
  1. Incorporate AI into the curriculum to prepare students for the future of work

    • Are students and faculty AI-literate?
    • Do they have opportunities to experiment with AI, innovate, and solve problems in their own fields?

  2. Provide 24/7, personalized support with one-stop conversational student AI

    • What type of support does AI provide?
    • What data sources does it have access to?
    • Is it unified across the student lifecycle?

  3. Maximize enrollment/advancement yield with hyper-personalized content generation

    • How is AI being used to generate, deploy, and optimize content at scale?
    • What data sources feed into AI tools to personalize and improve quality of content?

  4. Supercharge faculty and staff productivity

    • What roles can AI support?
    • What tasks can it speed up and automate?
    • What types of AI tools are available?
    • Do faculty and staff know how to maximize productivity gains from AI tools?

  5. Transcend historical bounds of innovation in research

    • What support (e.g., training, institutional partnership, tech infrastructure) do faculty have to pursue AI research?
    • What AI tools are available for researchers both to streamline research processes and to conduct research with AI?

The diagnostic has four tiers that represent the relative maturity of an institution’s AI posture in each area, from low (tier one) to high (tier four).

Once you rank your maturity in each area, you may speak to an EAB expert to review the results and learn how EAB can help your institution fulfill its AI objectives. Send your completed diagnostic to [email protected] or your Strategic Leader, or fill out the form below, and we’ll follow up with next steps.
