Institutions worldwide are scrambling to meet increasingly broad and ambitious sustainability goals. While there is no one-size-fits-all sustainability strategy, leaders can learn from a vast number of creative and successful initiatives institutions have pursued across the globe. The Compendium of Sustainability Initiatives in Higher Education is designed to equip institutions with an extensive list of initiatives for achieving sustainability goals—no matter how ambitious.

This resource presents a robust menu of effective options that institutions can draw inspiration from and pursue. EAB sourced initiatives through interviews with Facilities, Estates, and sustainability leaders, as well as from analysis of sustainability plans from colleges and universities globally.

How to get the most out of the resource

Each compendium initiative is evaluated on four filters which represent the primary goals leaders have when determining their sustainability strategy:
  1. Reduce emissions and environmental footprint

    How much does an initiative reduce the campus’s environmental impact (e.g. carbon emissions, energy usage, and water usage)?

  2. Advance sustainability research and education

    Does an initiative integrate sustainability into faculty and student learning and research?

  3. Ensure return on investment

    Does an initiative pay for itself with cost savings? How much does the investment return?

  4. Enhance community visibility

    Is the initiative visible to the campus community and beyond? Does it generate PR and demonstrate the institution’s commitment and progress toward sustainability?

Every initiative’s impact is evaluated on all four filters using a three-point scale of low, medium, or high. Note that some initiatives advance certain goals more than others. For instance, institutions aspiring toward carbon neutrality may focus on initiatives rated highly under “Reduce Emissions and Environmental Footprint.” By comparison, institutions seeking to train students to become sustainability stewards may instead focus on initiatives strong in “Advance Sustainability Research and Education.” These filters can guide institutions toward specific goals as well as ensure plans are holistic in nature.
