From Caution to Curiosity: Higher Ed Success Staff Weigh in on AI’s Role in Student Success

The use of new AI tools has become commonplace, and student success professionals are no exception. As higher ed moves from caution to curiosity, EAB sought to understand how student success professionals are using AI now, and what opportunities they see for using AI to improve their work and the student experience.

What would make student success staff more comfortable using AI in their roles? How are they already using AI to improve efficiency in student services? Is adoption outpacing institutional policies and coordination? This spring, we set out to answer these questions and more in a survey of 200+ practitioners about AI’s role in student success. This insight paper shares four key findings from that survey:

  1. AI adoption is outpacing institutional coordination
  2. Staff want to learn about AI through collaboration with their peers
  3. Concern is shifting how to do AI “right”
  4. AI can make student success jobs easier
