Maintaining Data Continuity Through System Migrations with Edify

Colorado School of Mines, a public R1 research university in Golden, CO, with 8,044 students and a 93% retention rate, had an inefficient on- premises Banner ODS environment that required significant hands-on administration. A migration to Banner SaaS promised long-term benefits but would involve large-scale data extraction, backup, validation, and transfer responsibilities, all of which fell to internal teams. There was no clear roadmap for ensuring continuity or avoiding data loss.

At the same time, Mines was planning additional system changes, including a transition to Workday for HR and Finance. These simultaneous migrations meant an increased risk of errors, data inconsistencies, and operational disruption during the migration.

Mines turned to Edify, EAB’s higher education data management solution, to reduce the risk of errors and data loss. The Edify team partnered with Mines early in the process to map out their full system landscape. Edify’s data warehousing functionality served as a safety net while Mines backed up and migrated data from both Banner and their legacy ODS into a centralized platform. Additionally, Mines unified data from Banner and Workday within Edify, creating a single system in which to configure and manage data.

With their campus data consolidated, the Mines team is free to focus on higher-level strategic priorities. With Edify they can understand their technology landscape, determine best practices for migration, and mitigate potential roadblocks.
