3 examples of alumni solicitations to support vulnerable students

Fundraising for vulnerable students during COVID-19 pandemic

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, many alumni, friends of the university, and other community members are worried about the hardships facing students right now and are asking for opportunities to assist. Below are three examples of recent solicitations sent by colleges and universities letting alumni know how they can help current students.

UCLA launches the Bruin Tech Fund to connect high-need students with laptops and Wi-Fi

Across the last week, UCLA set-up and launched the Bruin Tech fund grant. This crowdfunding campaign is focused on ensuring students who rely on campus Wi-Fi and loaner laptops from the library will have “the resources to purchase the technology at home on their own to continue to excel in their courses in a virtual environment.” When the campaign launched on March 19, the initial goal was 1,000 donors and $100,000. Within the first hour, they had over 250 donors and have now raised the goal to $500,000.

University of Vermont’s pandemic response fund to help care for students

At the direction of President Garimella, the university established a new pandemic response fund.  Donations to this fund will be used to support student emergency travel, remote education assistance, and community online training sessions.  As part of the email solicitation, UVM shared the story of Azilee Curl, a senior two months from graduation who is getting help from the new fund

Ohio University rebrands Giving Day 2020 to become #BobcatsTakeCare

Ohio University announced its upcoming day of giving will be solely focused on supporting “our most affected students during the COVID-19 pandemic.”  Recognizing that some alumni may not be able to give money right now, the #BobcatsTakeCare campaign also includes several ways to engage with the institution.  For example, alumni are encouraged to support current students by:

Posting a video, photo, or written message on Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #BobcatsTakeCare and visit bobcatstakecare.ohio.edu to see the collection of messages in real time.

Networking with fellow Bobcats – both students and alumni – by signing up for the Bobcat Mentorship Network.

Sharing words of encouragement to our senior class of 2020 by sending well wishes to alumniengagement@ohio.edu.
