The Diversity Board Matrix will help advancement staff set concrete goals for the demographics of each advancement-affiliated board and council.

The Diversity Board Matrix below will help advancement staff set concrete goals for the demographics of each advancement-affiliated board and council.

Institutions’ alumni populations have become more diverse in recent years. To signal a commitment to this diversity, advancement needs to align the demographics of their affiliated boards and councils with the alumni population.

Currently, most advancement-affiliated boards and councils represent traditional donors (i.e., white heterosexual males and couples from the silent and baby boomer generations) and do not highlight the diversity of our alumni. Advancement needs to systematically diversify their boards and councils to prevent the gap between leaders and constituents from continuing to grow.

Ultimately, the results of the matrix will prepare advancement to intentionally fill board and council vacancies as they arise with diverse individuals.

After completing the Diversity Board Matrix, consider creating a comprehensive list of experienced alumni volunteers, their demographics, and their current board or council responsibilities. Keep the list in a common online space to make sure advancement is always prepared to nominate a diverse individual to fill an open board or council position.
