Every year, the IT Forum’s research cycle culminates in a series of executive roundtables hosted around the country, where groups of 15-25 CIOs come together to collaborate in solving their biggest strategic problems. Members share their current challenges and roadblocks with peers and spend an active two days planning action to tackle their up-at-night issues—informed by new insights gathered through the IT Forum’s research.
The dates are set for the 2019-2020 research roundtables, where we’ll be sharing insights and best practices on the topic of IT Organizational Design for the Twenty-First Century. This past winter, technology leaders from the USA, Canada, and the UK came together to discuss two urgent issues facing the IT organization: helping to drive digital transformation on campus and finding new ways to measure and communicate IT value.
Building a digital university
For every group, day one kicked off with introductions and a cataloging of ongoing projects and headaches: Tales of ERP migrations, rogue purchasing, and multiple presidential transitions echoed around the room. This climate of change provided the backdrop for the IT Forum’s first set of materials on digital transformation in higher education.
After an overview of the commercial sector’s accelerating digital innovation, the focus turned to higher education specifically, and the work of disruptors and pioneering colleges and universities. IT Forum researchers provided a framework for driving change within and beyond IT and also worked through a digital transformation readiness assessment with attendees to provide actionable areas of focus for their IT teams back on campus.
Given the need to bring cabinets and boards up to speed on the urgency of digital transformation, members told us that they wanted to bring this presentation back to campus for those audiences. New metrics for IT: Communicating IT value
Day two moved from the lofty goals of digital transformation to the everyday struggle of communicating IT’s value to other leaders on campus. With budget cuts a stark reality for most campuses, resource competition among different departments is fierce. To send CIOs back to campus equipped to make the case for IT, researchers shared best practices in choosing the right metrics to track and ways to communicate IT’s value to the broader campus.
For guidance in choosing metrics, Drake University’s IT balanced scorecard—a part of their institutional Continuous Improvement Plan—was a runaway hit at every meeting. For guidance in establishing value to the college or university, the IT Forum’s “value story creation workshop” sent leaders back to campus with a simple process to help their teams develop technology value contribution stories.
