Resilience is one of the most popular topics in higher ed—for students and administrators alike.
People with higher resilience tend to be more productive, take fewer sick days, and have lower health care costs. And students with grit are better equipped to manage the stressful situations they may encounter in college.
But how does one become resilient?
Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant, a professor of management and psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, aim to teach people how to build resilience in a free, online course on LinkedIn.
Sandberg is no stranger to adversity, writes Jessica Stillman for Inc. magazine. After the unexpected death of her husband in 2015, Sandberg learned a brutal lesson on how to bounce back after tragedy, she adds.
Now, Sandberg and Grant are condensing their research and real-life insights into nine bite-sized videos that break building resilience down into practical steps. The two- to three-minute videos cover topics like practicing gratitude during hardship and learning how to talk about loss.
The online course argues that resilience isn’t a trait you’re born with. Instead, “it’s a skill set that we work on throughout our lives,” says Grant. And you don’t have to wait until you experience difficulty to start developing mental toughness, says Grant in the introductory video. Resilience is a skill you should practice “long before [you] face any kind of tragedy,” he adds (Stillman, Inc., 3/14/18).
EAB researchers went directly to over 200 students and asked how they conceive of success. Their answers surprised, delighted, and moved us—and helped us focus our research and development agenda for the upcoming year.
